"It's about doggone time," said Steph Mamber, President, CEO, COO, CFO, and Chairman of the Board of Directors of The Huntsvillan, Inc. Since its founding, the site has averaged one article per week, distributed broadly across its four coverage areas: [everyday happenings](https://www.huntsvillan.com/saywhat/), [local government](https://www.huntsvillan.com/publicacc/), [creative and expressive activity](https://www.huntsvillan.com/human/), and [humor](https://www.huntsvillan.com/humor/). Altogether, these posts have garnered thousands and thousands of reads, making *The Huntsvillan* [one](https://thehoustoniannews.com/) of [several](https://www.itemonline.com/) [valuable](https://www.walkercountypress.com/) [news](https://newwaverlycommunitynewsandevents.wordpress.com/) [sources](https://hellohuntsvilletx.com/) for Walker County. In its first months of operation, patterns, or themes, began to emerge, entirely unplanned – appearing in one article here, another there, still another a few months later. These themes, most visible from a distance, are news in themselves. This article will explore four of the most important, one day at a time. To do so, it will be updated each morning all week. Today: asking the questions others won't. Tuesday: being bullish on Huntsville and Walker County. Wednesday: just kidding! Thursday: setting a local news agenda. To cap off the week, a new article will appear on Friday, an update of one from the spring. Altogether, a sizeable portion of the past year's output will be referenced in exploring these four themes, helping readers learn about early articles they may have missed. We just didn't anticipate how difficult that would be. September 2025, when the site was launched, was a low point for news in Walker County. *The Houstonian* at Sam Houston State University was [just coming back](https://www.facebook.com/SHSUMCOM/posts/pfbid02SSirbKKVj3LmcsgyeLby9Jutsk7ZvYY7jz6xyhFpL166WZUQGyhe98QrAZHwtjqCl) after folding entirely, while the *Huntsville Item* relied largely on press releases and reports from wire services (such as the Associated Press). Local government could get awfully comfortable in that environment, and did – as we discovered that very month. We planned to write about a community event held at SHSU that fall, but the university's [media arm](https://www.shsu.edu/offices-departments/integrated-marketing-communications/media-requests) prohibited us from interviewing the organizer, killing the story. Another entity across town stiff-armed us at the same time: the Walker County Hospital District. We asked it for contact information for the five members of their elected Board of Managers, for what became a [bombshell article](https://www.huntsvillan.com/in-comparative-terms-hospital-bond-proposal-spends-tax-dollars-bigly/) about the bond proposal up for election that fall. They provided information for only one.\[1\] Their intransigence became a part of the story in its own right. Subsequent interactions with both entities have been no more productive. We published an article on a homestead exemption the Hospital District extended to seniors – one of the [largest in the state](https://www.huntsvillan.com/hospital-district-largely-silent-on-giant-tax-break-for-seniors/) – and the board of managers refused to comment. Same deal when we published [another article](https://www.huntsvillan.com/hospital-district-board-of-managers-extends-own-terms-o/) on them doubling their own terms of office.\[2\] Sam Houston State University was similarly silent in last month's big series on university property acquisitions – building new classroom space when[ existing space is underutilized](https://www.huntsvillan.com/goliath/), buying up commercial property [all over town](https://www.huntsvillan.com/leviathan/), and going big into the commercial property [leasing business](https://www.huntsvillan.com/behemoth/). In each case, that silence became a part of the story. The tide has begun to turn. The Item brought in a new editor who has aggressively [pursued](https://www.itemonline.com/news/no-meetings-no-minutes-hospital-district-board-moves-on-federal-financing-after-residents-ask-when/article%5F84b3d16c-af38-44c6-a433-cfa59a98c9ac.html) hospital district [stories](https://www.itemonline.com/news/walker-county-hospital-district-faces-renewed-criticism-from-residents-over-lack-of-transparency/article%5Fc7899e93-32ba-49bf-adec-fef7630eb50c.html), and published several [articles](https://www.itemonline.com/news/ag-declines-to-investigate-walking-quorum-allegation/article%5F9134b3bd-3e75-4c4c-b10b-9546c502bc8a.html) on transparency, for the hospital district and [otherwise](https://www.itemonline.com/opinion/budget-transparency-is-more-than-meeting-the-legal-minimum/article%5F78dffc0d-382a-4a34-a9bb-f8d5f33f27be.html). The Walker County Press has also [gotten in on the act](https://www.walkercountypress.com/article/979,hospital-district-provides-contradictory-statements-during-meeting). Other entities in town have started adapting to the new environment. Huntsville's City Manager Scott Swigert did not respond to outreaches on articles about [pedestrian safety](https://www.huntsvillan.com/sidewalks-to-nowhere-the-tricky-business-of-getting-around-huntsville-on-foot/) and [tourism marketing](https://www.huntsvillan.com/huntsville-spends-over-1-million-annually-marketing-itself-to-tourists-why-is-it-hiding-one-of-its-crown-jewels/), but Huntsville Main Street has been responsive on recent stories about [murals](https://www.huntsvillan.com/a-painting-is-worth-a-thousand-words-so-whats-a-mural-worth/) and the [local music scene](https://www.huntsvillan.com/dont-look-now-but-huntsville-is-becoming-a-live-music-mecca/) – with an update from its Tourism Department coming tomorrow. Local school districts have been particularly responsive. Huntsville ISD answered uncomfortable questions about the [closing of a school under their supervision](https://www.huntsvillan.com/accountability-in-action/) (as part of a larger story about school ratings rising in the district generally). New Waverly ISD cooperated with our writer on an uplifting story about its graduates getting into [top-ranked colleges](https://www.huntsvillan.com/there-must-be-something-in-the-water/). Even Richards ISD has gotten involved, answering questions for our recent story on [vouchers](https://www.huntsvillan.com/its-only-money/). With this new journalism, an added dose of [public accountability](https://www.huntsvillan.com/publicacc/) has come to Walker County.
